Biography

I am a Chartered Civil Engineer and a Senior lecturer in Civil Engineering.

I grew up in Germany and after finishing my studies in Karlsruhe 鈥 a city near the French-German border 鈥 I came to Edinburgh for my final year project.聽 I stayed on to do my PhD at the University of Edinburgh.聽

My research expertise lies in the application of high powered numerical modelling of complex civil engineering systems. To date, my work has focused on the strength and the stability of thin curved structures such as wind turbine towers and pipelines.

In 2014 - in recognition of my international research standing - I was appointed as the National Expert on CEN/TC 250/SC 3/WG 6: Evolution of EN 1993-1-6 - Shell structures.

I鈥檓 a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a European Engineer (EUR ING).

I鈥檓 also actively involved in promoting STEM careers to women through events such as International Women in Engineering Day.

Interests

My research expertise of the past 13 years lies in the application of high powered numerical modelling of complex civil engineering systems, which are applicable to many research areas. My research to date has focussed on the strength and the stability of thin curved structures such as wind turbine towers and pipelines. In recognition of my international research standing and quality of work up to now I was appointed (in 2014) National Expert for the Eurocode EN1993-1-6: Strength and Stability of Shell Structures. Eurocodes are a set of harmonized technical rules, which have now replaced the British Standards, providing a common approach for the design of buildings and other civil engineering works and construction products. Only one Expert from each member country can be appointed for each Eurocode. Incorporating my research into the standard has a major impact on the design of thin walled structures across Europe.

Outreach

Outreach

Recently Dr. Dello-Sterpaio and I have been awarded an 鈥淚ngenious鈥 outreach grant by the Royal Academy of Engineering. The project aims to engage school children, teachers and the wider community with engineers from research, industry and academia. Focussing on the rebuilding of Dundee Railway Station, the project will provide the audience with an opportunity to understand the science and technology behind engineering the build in a real life context. During 2011-2013 I was a member of the organising committee of the Women in Science Festival. Since 2014 I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
